| 1. Define synchronization. (1 mark) Ans: Data transfer between two devices
2. Discuss the fundamental components which made up general mobile phone. (3 marks) Ans: - Memory of a smart phone can be categorized as ROM, Cache Memory, RAM and Flash Memory. ROM is to store the operating system. Cache Memory is to increase the speed of the device. RAM is where the OS and all applications run. Flash memory is where the OS store some files. - Operating Systems in smart phone can be divided in different types. Symbian from Nokia is the most popular at the moment. There is no one OS in smart phones that dominate the market. - Processor of the smart phone is basically based on the ARM family of 32-bit RISC architecture. The RISC is very low power consumption.
3. Consider the communication technologies in smart phone; discuss which would be the best choice for data transfer. (2 marks) Ans: - Wireless WiMAX would be the best choice because it can be considered as a 3G connectivity. - Wired USB is very fast in its data transfer, especially the new USB 3.0 which enable 10mbps transfer rate.
4. Discuss how the User Interfaces of a smart phone can help to attract the customers and increase the revenue for the smart phone. (4 marks) Ans: Interfaces of the smart phone are the means of interacting with their mobile device. If the mobile phone has a user0friendly interface, with simple functions and beautiful designs, a lot of customers would be interested in the phone as well. On the other hand, if the device has a confusing user interface, no matter how much technological hardware it possesses, not many people would be interested in the phone. Marketing the phone is not only about composing a good phone, but also build an easy-to-use interface with it.
5. Outline the two different types of keyboard on smart phones. (2 marks) Ans: - Detachable keyboards are a keyboard that is not part of the smart phone hardware. In order to use the keyboard, the device must be attached to it. - Multi-touch keyboard is the keyboard that is installed in the Operating System itself. It can be used without any additional hardware, and the multi-touch gestures would enable the keyboard to work efficiently.
6. Identify what the iPhone 4 includes on the glass to sense the user’s touch. (1 mark) Ans: The iPhone 4 includes a panel laminated on the glass which uses electrical fields to sense the user’s touch. 7. Discuss the usefulness of a 4G network if it were to be used in this generation. (4 marks) Ans: - 4G network has the speed in terms of Gigabits per second, which is much faster than 3G network, which is limited to only in terms of Megabits per second. (2 mark) - With the need to access internet every instant, 4G network would enable file transfer on the internet a lot faster. As the article in the case study has stated that even a 15 year old Sarah Matzkin uses her phone (and internet connection everyday) (2 marks)
8. State the difference between revolution and evolution. (2 mark) Ans: A revolution is a completely new change in technology which means that a new frequency spectrum is needed and an evolution is an improvement from the old technologies, which can use the same frequency spectrum. 9. Explain how the security in smart phone is slowly becoming dangerous. (3 marks) Ans: Smartphones are just like computers which can be attacked from the outside sources. Now, the data loss occurred from a virus is very unlikely because it has not been developed to the fullest yet. Still, it would cause us some OS to be slower, or have some modification to it.
10. Discuss what it means by to “jail-break” the smart phone. (P9) (3 marks) Ans: “Jail-break” is a term which is the technique that is used so that the user can download third-party applications. These applications are developed by people who are not working for the company of the brand of the smart phones, so there might be some viruses in these applications. 11. State the target of the smartphone (1 mark) Ans: The main target is to provide the general public who want to be in touch whenever and wherever and business people for doing their work anywhere they want. 12. Discuss the use of application market. (2 mark) Ans: It is the store on the internet provided by the manufacturers of the OS to allow users to download specific software modules. These applications are developed by independent companies. 13. Explain the smartphone applications for its specialized use. (5 marks) Ans: The users use the smartphones in two ways, for their personal use and or their general business use. As different people have different needs in their use of smartphone, applications can help them in their specialized use. For example, for medical profession users, there are applications that can alert them about the patients in emergency, like a replacement of a pager. Not only it will alert the doctors, it will be able to automatically access and display information from the relevant patient’s files or lab results. 14. Explain how smartphones affect the society today. (4 marks) Ans: Smartphones are being invented because of the social instinct and human desire to improve the quality of life. This includes the need for better communication. The smartphones had let the users to be connected 24/7. According to the statistics, 30% of the workers in U.S. who use technology to do their jobs feel the need to stay connected to work 24/7. This is how much important smartphones can be in the society today. 15. State how nanotechnology helps the Nokia Morph to be the design for the Nokia’s future smartphone. (1 mark) Ans: The nanotechnology helps the Nokia Morph to modify its shapes, to stretch or compress in whatever way the user wants. 16. State the convergence of technologies in smartphones. (1 mark) Ans: It is how a smartphone has so many feature altogether. One smartphone would be enough for a user, as it brings together all the other essential technologies in a small device.
17. Name the display that Apple had used on iPhone 4 to accomplish the 326 pixels per inch resolution. (1 mark) Ans: Retina Display 18. Predict what 5G network would provide us in a few years’ time. (1 mark) Ans: Speed in terms of Terabits per second. We might also include the use of holograms in the network with its fast data transfer. 19. In article 2, state your opinion about the Sarah’s use of phone. (2 marks) Ans: In the article, Sarah uses the phone 24/7 and she is only 15 years old. Now, young people cannot live with the smartphones as it enables us to be connected to friends and information. However, this might not be good as using smartphones all the time might be a waste of time. 20. Using your imagination, state what technologies would be used to develop the smartphones in the future. (2 marks) Ans: In future, smartphones might be able to display holographic images. It might also have more interaction with our physical world, and it would be easier to access information. They might also use the nanotechnology like Nokia Morph.
