1. What allows Bluetooth enabled device to automatically connect with each other? (1)
Ans: Radio waves.
2. List down the major advances in mobile phone technology that Telecommunication Union has recorded in four generations. Each should have at least two except the first generation. (4)
Ans: 1st Gen (1979): Analog transmission of data
2nd Gen (1991): Digital transmission of data and speed in terms of Kilobits per sec.
3rd Gen (2001): Seed in terms of Megabits per sec., multimedia/video streaming, data sent in packets, simultaneous use of speech and data services, new frequency bands, 3G. (Choose only two from six.)
4th Gen (2011): Speed in terms of Gigabits per sec., all networks are IP packet-switched
3. What is the main factor that makes smartphones indispensable to many working lives? Give some example to support your answer. (3)
Ans: Applications allows users to download specific software modules developed by independent companies. This is helpful. For example, medical profession, this is fast swapping its pagers for smartphones. Links to reference material have become standard aids for many doctors, but specialized applications are becoming available.
4. Explain in words form the diagram of the different uses of a smartphone. (5)
Ans: Smartphones allow users to do many things, which the three big subjects are including personal use, general business use, and specialized use. In specialized use, it is then separated further into many different categories. For example, educators, motorists, doctors, scientists, police etc.
5. “It is good to stay connected 24/7 via the smartphones.” Comment on this statement and decide whether or not it is good for the user to be connected 24/7 in reference to the effect that this has had on the quality of life of users. (3)
Ans: It is, in one way, bad to stay connected 24/7. People, especially employees, are more worried in terms of finding time off because being connected 24/7 forces the user to be in contact with their supervisors, which they are more than likely to send part-time works. However, if the employees are not connected 24/7 or maybe a teenager is not connected 24/7 with their friends, it would be bothersome for them to answer your request one or two hours ago.
6. List at least six benefits a user would get through smartphones. (3)
Ans: Mobile Phone, mp3/4 Player, web browser, E-mail client, palm-top computer, direct links networks, wireless credit card, PIM, digital camera. (Choose only six from nine.)
7. What are the types of memory built in? (2)
Ans: ROM (firmware), cache memory, RAM, flash memory
8. Compare the operating systems between computer and smartphone in terms of its dominance. Identify the most dominant OS used in smartphone. (2)
Ans: Computer may have Microsoft as the most dominant OS, but smartphone does not have this dominance. However, over forty percent of the smartphones out there are run with Symbian OS.
9. What processor does the smartphone uses? Explain why this processor is used. (2)
Ans: Vast majority of mobile devices have processors based on the ARM family of 32-bit RISC architecture. This processor is used because the architecture features very low power consumption.
10. Identify and explain what are: Dynamic memory, disk ‘E’, disk ‘Z’, disk ‘C’. (4)
Ans: Dynamic memory is RAM, which is the electronics where the OS and all applications actually run. Disk ‘E’ is the expansion card, which is where you store most of your files and install most of your applications. Disk ‘Z’ is the firmware, which is where the OS lives. Disk ‘C’ is the flash storage, which is where the users and the OS store some files.
11. What is the least unpopular, but well-known, OS out there? (1)
Ans: Linux.
12. What are some exceptions for mobile devices in terms of communication? (1)
Ans: Mobile devices rely on their ability to communicate both with each other and with fixed devices such as personal computers. Sometimes, communication is done through mobile phone network.
13. What is one advantage for using Bluetooth when the user happens to be in a room with thick walls? (1)
Ans: Bluetooth could be used even if there are walls of a building because the signals could pass through walls.
14. Explain piconet and why do we need it. (2)
Ans: Piconet forms when a connection is made between two or more devices, which it is simply for creating a personal area network.
15. What would happen if there are many connections made between two or more devices? (3)
Ans: Piconet can exist within the same area without interfering with each other. This is achieved both by frequency hopping and by the used of device addresses.
16. What are the factors that make keyboard complicated to manufacture? Give examples. (2)
Ans: Manufacturers are trying to overcome the limitations of space with various designs or techniques. Examples of these may include: detachable keyboards, scroll wheel, thumb wheel, and multi-touch.
17. Why does iPhone 4 has a good reputation in terms of the effectiveness of the touch screen than other smartphones? (3)
Ans: iPhone 4 includes a panel laminated on the glass which uses electrical fields to sense the user’s touch. It has a multi-touch feature that can register simultaneous touches. Information is displayed on the panel using a “Retina display”. Moreover, display contains a high pixel density that provides clear and sharp images.
18. What are new technologies known as? (2)
Ans: A revolution or an evolution.
19. What are some systematical ways that smartphones can be destroyed? (2)
Ans: Smartphones can be attacked from outside sources including viruses, phishing and social engineering efforts.
20. What are some new features that Morph brings? (2)
Ans: Flexible materials, transparent electronics, self-cleaning, charged by solar power, senses our environment.
